The difference is the interaction model
A barcode normally requires deliberate line-of-sight scanning. UHF RFID can read multiple tagged items without line-of-sight within a designed read zone. That can remove a manual scan step, but it also creates a radio-frequency engineering problem: you need to know which reads represent a real business event.
RFID is useful when the event is worth automating
Good candidates include dock-door validation, reusable asset tracking, high-throughput inventory movement and process-stage detection. If a worker is already touching one item at a time and a barcode scan is reliable, RFID may add cost without adding enough value.
Pilot the physics before the rollout
Tag material, orientation, reader power, antenna placement, metal, liquids and the physical layout all affect performance. A pilot should measure read accuracy in the actual environment and validate the software reconciliation logic before hardware is purchased at scale.
The integration is the product
A reader producing EPC values is not a warehouse solution. The useful system knows what those EPCs represent, which business event occurred, how duplicates are handled, what the WMS expected and what an operator should do when reality disagrees.
